Two .600 teams square off in Los Angeles as Gio Gonzalez leads the Nationals against Hyun-Jin Ryu and the Dodgers. Gonzalez’s 3.03 ERA seems low for a pitcher who walked 35 batters and allowed 10 home runs in 68 1/3 innings. Most of the offense against him came with the bases empty, however. Opponents are batting .303/.388/.524 with the bases empty, .163/.273/.240 with men on. So the power he allows comes when it can do the least damage, which is why he is getting away with all the walks. I suspect that will even out eventually.
Ryu, like Gonzalez, allow a high home run rate. Like Gonzalez, most of that power came with the bases empty. Unlike Gonzalez, however, Ryu gives up a high BA with men in scoring position, .333/.396/.548. Like Gonzalez, I suspect Ryu’s numbers will adjust as the season progresses.
Enjoy!
