The Rockies try to keep rolling as they send Jeff Hoffman against the Cubs and former Rockies pitcher Eddie Butler. Hoffman is as impressive this season as he was unimpressive last season. In 31 1/3 innings in 2016, his first year in the majors, he allowed seven home runs and 17 walks while striking out 22. This season, in 20 2/3 innings he allowed three home runs and just two walks, striking out 26. Butler owns a season ERA under 4.00 for the first time, allowing just one home run in 24 innings. He allowed 28 home runs in 159 1/3 innings playing for the Rockies.
Oakland tries to end Tampa Bay’s short winning streak as Sean Manaea faces Matt Andriese. This season, Manaea shows better control on the road, with both a higher strikeout rage and a lower walk rate than at home. Well times extra-base hits hurt him away, as four men have been driven in from first base. Andriese is undefeated at home this season, despite allowing seven of his ten home runs in Tampa Bay.
Justin Verlander and Chris Sale square off as the Tigers continue their series with the Red Sox. The two started against each other five times in the past. Verlander dominated the matchups, going 2-0 with a 1.46 ERA, while Sale is 0-2 with a 2.78 ERA. Given the number of no-decisions, they appear to have engaged in a number of excellent pitching duels.
Finally, the Brewers and Diamondbacks are both vying for division titles as Junior Guerra battles Zack Godley. Guerra is now 10-3 with a 2.79 ERA in his short career. None of his three-true outcomes are outstanding, but he allowed just 116 hits in 145 1/3 innings. Despite a 2.39 ERA, Godley racked up four no-decisions so far in six starts this season. The Diamondbacks are scoring a decent number of runs in his games, so I assume they are scoring late.
Enjoy!
