Games of the Day

The Yankees look to finish a successful week against the top AL East contenders as they try to sweep the Orioles. Kevin Gausman faces Chad Green. The Yankees took two of three from Boston earlier in the week. In winning four in a row, they scored at least eight runs in all four games. Gausman gets the double whammy of pitching poorly and suffering bad luck. His ERA stands at 5.86, while his FIP is a still poor 5.19. Green makes a spot start in place of Masahiro Tanaka. In 16 2/3 relief inning this season, Green struck out 20 and walked just four.

The Colorado goes for a sweep of the Cubs and their eighth win in a row as rookie Rockie Antonio Senzatela faces veteran Jake Arrieta. Senzatela pitched extremely well this season with runners in scoring position, allowing a .180 BA and a .203 OBP. He’s not pitching around batters. Arrieta still strikes out batters at a good rate, walks batters at a low rate, but is getting hit this season. Thirty eight percent of his hits this season have gone for extra bases, compared to 33% last year. As he is allowing a much higher BA, those long hits are hurting him more.

Finally, the best pitching match-up of the day takes place in Colorado where the surprising Brewers take on the equally surprising Diamondbacks. Chase Anderson squares off against Robbie Ray. Anderson (a former Arizona pitcher) at age 29, appears to have figured out how to keep the ball in the park. He developed a cut fastball, and so far it appears to be working as this is his first season with an ERA under 4.00. Ray blows away batters with 95 K in 75 2/3 innings, and he added a curve ball to his repertoire this season.

Enjoy!
