Games of the Day

The Cubs try to take two in a row from the Cardinals as Mike Leake faces Jon Lester. Leake does a good job of preventing base runners this season, especially on the road. Despite a low strikeout rate, he allowed 14 hits and five walks in 20 away innings, good for a 1.93 ERA. Lester could not be more opposite home and road. He stands at 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA at home, 40 innings, 25 hits allowed and 39 K. On the road, he is 0-3 with a 7.11 ERA, 25 1/3 innings, 39 hits, but 28 K.

The Astros and Rangers produce another great pitching duel. Dallas Keuchel came out on top Friday night versus Yu Darvish. Saturday, Baseball Musings Pitcher of the Month for May, Lance Mcullers, takes on Andrew Cashner. McCullers does not seem to tire. After 75 pitches, he allows a .185 BA (10/54), compared to a .210 BA overall. Cashner owns a 2.92 ERA despite having walked more batters than he struck out 27 BB and 25 K in 52 1/3 innings. I like to think that success with no numbers can’t continue, but Cashner may be pitching around trouble. He certainly does well with men on base and men in scoring position, allowing a .129 BA in the former and an .079 BA in the latter.

Enjoy!
