Addison Russell is not playing for the Cubs tonight after a third party accusation that Russell abused his wife. Russell’s wife accused him of infidelity. Russell has denied the abuse charge.
As Epstein said, Russell has not been suspended from the team at this time, but the front office did feel it was best for him to stay away today. Also, Epstein said there is not technically a formal investigation by MLB at this time, though I’ll admit that I don’t have a great sense of clarity on the distinction between a formal investigation, and whatever it is that MLB has already confirmed it is doing – “looking into” the situation.
Russell issued this statement:
Russell issued a statement Thursday that said: “Any allegation I have abused my wife is false and hurtful. For the well-being of my family, I’ll have no further comment.”
Spokesman Patrick Courtney says MLB is looking into the situation. Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says the department “does not have any current investigation” into Russell or allegations of domestic violence.
We will see how this plays out. It would appear that he at least abused his relationship with his wife.
