Derby Don’t Matter

The Home Run Derby didn’t seem to hurt Giancarlo Stanton at all. In the month since the All-Star game he hit 14 home runs, the most in the majors by three. Twenty of his 26 hits went for extra bases. He struck out 26 times also, both an average of one a game. He also reached base 19 times by a walk or HBP, so pitchers are being careful.

We’ve seen flashes of this greatness, but injuries usually limited his playing time. The OBP and slugging percentage were there, but he didn’t play enough to post the big numbers. Now healthy, and in his seasonal age 27 season, Stanton put it all together to show the baseball world what he can do playing every day.

Chris Davis was the last player to reach 50 home runs in 2003, and the only player since 2007 to do so. (Alex Rodriguez and Prince Fielder both reached the 50 HR plateau that year.) Stanton set himself up to come close to 60.
