Long Hits for Longoria

Evan Longoria hit for the cycle Tuesday night as the Rays beat the Astros 6-4. The Rays third baseman almost got the reverse cycle, homering in the first inning and tripling in the third inning. He finished with the double in the ninth as he went four for five on the evening.

With Adrian Beltre reaching 3000 hits and Longoria hitting for the cycle in the same week, it’s a nice reminder that we’ve been living in the golden age of third basemen. Longoria came up in 2008, and since that time these are the third basemen who came to the plate at least 2000 times playing that position. In an era when offense was a bit down, they hit for average, got on base, and hit for power. Most of them played excellent defense as well.

Then again, the list from 40 years ago wasn’t bad, either.
