Triple Threat

I was just looking at the starting lineup for the Padres, and noticed Luis Perdomo‘s unusual batting line, .148/.179/.407. My immediate thought was that most of his hits went for extra bases. In fact, all his hits this season went for extra bases, a double and three triples. That total is even more impressive when you realize he’s accomplished that in about 1/3 fewer at bats than anyone else this season. His teammate, outfielder Franchy Cordero, accomplished the feat in 92 at bats. Like Perdomo, Cordero doesn’t record hits very often, but a good percentage of them go for extra bases. Given Perdomo has not been a great pitcher so far, I would urge the Padres to turn him into a position player to see if he can break Chief Wilson‘s record of 36 triples in a season that has stood since 1912.
