The Cubs host the Braves in their usual Friday afternoon game as Anibal Sanchez takes on Yu Darvish. Sanchez struck out eight batters in eight innings so far. He’s trading walks for hits, as he allowed five free passes but only two hits. Darvish struck out 13 and walked three in 10 1/3 innings, but allowed seven hits and six runs. Opponents are 3 for 5 with runners in scoring position.
The Rangers and Astros feature two former Pennsylvania aces as Cole Hamels face Gerrit Cole. (Which reminds me of an old Laugh-In theme, if Cole Hamels married Gerrit Cole he’d be Cole Cole!) Hamels, like Darvish above, is blowing away batters but giving up home runs. He struck out 23 batters in 16 innings, but allowed five home runs for a 5.06 ERA. Cole struck out 22 in 14 innings with his only run coming on a solo homer, and his ERA stands at 0.64.
Finally, Andrew Triggs faces Mike Leake as the Athletics meet the Mariners. Triggs is throwing his curve ball more than his slider this season, and so far his ERA is lower. Leake is way on the wrong side of the strikeout to walk ratio, with seven walks and just four Ks. Opponents are just 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position, however. If that ratio continues, he will be leaking runs at some point.
Enjoy!
