Games of the Day

The Yankees open at home against the Rays as Chris Archer faces Jordan Montgomery. Archer pitched well at Yankee Stadium during his career. He allowed seven home runs in his 60 1/3 innings, but that’s balanced by just 12 walks and 55 strikeouts. All eyes will be on Giancarlo Stanton in his new home uniform, but he is 0 for 6 against Archer with two strikeouts. The Rays saw Montgomery three times in his rookie year of 2017. They handled him well despite striking out 17 times in 13 1/3 innings.

See yesterday’s post for the Phillies-Mets match up.

Out in the desert, Clayton Kershaw leads the Dodgers against the Diamondbacks and Zack Godley. Kershaw allowed just one run in his opening start of the season and lost. It’s just the third time in his career that he took a loss after allowing one run, and the first time since 2012. Godley lived up to his last name in 2017, posting a 3.37 ERA in 155 innings. Despite the low ERA, he managed just an 8-9 record. An extreme ground ball pitcher, he limited fly balls even more in 2017, and got batters swing under the ball more. His pop ups induced percentage went up, while his home runs allowed percentage went down.

Enjoy!
