It’s not a bad season for a hitter’s first name to end in an I. Didi Gregorius collected 11 hits in his first eight games, nine of them for extra bases. He leads the majors in slugging percentage at .964. Shohei Ohtani only batted in four games, but three of his 18 at bats ended in home runs, and he’s third (min 18 PA) in slugging at .889. Shortstops and pitcher are usually not the people we think about leading the league in slugging.
Nick Ahmed, Carlos Correa, Joe Panik, and Paul DeJong are middle infielders also slugging high early. Jessica Mendoza noted that better launch angles helped the little guys, and maybe that’s part of what we are seeing.
