The Braves try to make up ground in the NL East as they send Mike Foltynewicz against the Nationals and Stephen Strasburg. Foltynewicz’s strength lies in limiting walks. He is off to a hot start in June, not allowing a run in 14 innings. Strasburg’s strikeout rate is not longer astronomical, but it is still excellent. That helped him to allow just 60 hits in 80 1/3 innings, as he no longer seems to get rattled on the mound when things go bad.
The Rockies move to Pittsburgh where Kyle Freeland takes on Jameson Taillon. Freeland is one of a group of young Rockies pitchers who are making a difference for the team. Often in the past, Rockies pitchers did not improve away from Coors. This season their road ERA is about 1.6 runs below their home ERA. Freeland is 4-0 with a 3.18 ERA on the road this year. Taillon makes his return after surgery for testicular cancer. He was off to a good start with the Pirates, 2-1 with a 3.31 ERA in six starts.
The Rangers come off a sweep of the Nationals, and now take on another first place team as they visit the Astros. Yu Darvish faces Joe Musgrove. Darvish shows a very small platoon difference in 2017, as he is successful against both left-handed and right-handed batters. Musgrove’s main problem is allowed home runs. In his short career, 18 balls left the yard in just 115 1/3 innings.
