Games of the Day

If you are on the east coast, leave work early and find a bar with Extra Innings. On the west coast, take an early long lunch. You’ll want to find a way to watch the Nationals and the Dodgers as Stephen Strasburg faces Clayton Kershaw. The Bill James Season Score has Kershaw leading the Cy Young contenders, with Strasburg not that far back. Both are seven games winners, both own excellent ERAs, and both strike out nearly ten batters per nine innings. Kershaw this season is better at preventing walks, Strasburg at preventing home runs. It should be fun to see the two masters at work. Also, there might be some bad blood from Tuesday night.

The Mets send Zack Wheeler against the Rangers and Yu Darvish, as two under-performing teams battle. After missing two seasons, it took Wheeler four games to get his groove back. In his last six starts he posted a 2.65 ERA. He walked a lot of batters in that time, 17 in 34 innings, but He also induced seven double plays. Darvish has been very tough with runners in scoring position, opponents going 6 for 61 for an 0.098 BA. That has someone limited the damage of the 10 home runs he allowed.

Dallas Keuchel goes for his tenth win as the Astros take on Royals ace Jason Vargas. Keuchel won nine games in total in the 2016 season. He’s cut down on his home runs and walks, but his hits allowed have just plummeted. He allowed just 12 extra base hits so far this year. In 2016 he allowed 61 EXBH in about three times the PA. Vargas is still throwing about the same percentage of fastball, but he changed his mix from mostly four-seam fastballs to mostly two-seam fastballs.

Enjoy!
