Offense is down slightly compared to the first week of 2017. The big caveat with the comparisons this season is that an increase in days off added a few days to the 2018 season, so it’s 26 weeks and four days instead of 26 weeks and one day. That means 2017 will show fewer games through the same number of weeks, but will catch up as the season progresses. Run scoring in the first week this year is at 8.59 runs per game, compared to 8.65 last year.
Home runs, however, are down a bit, 2.05 this season compared to 2.24 through the first week of 2017. Walks, strikeouts, and other hits are up. Strikeouts are way up, 17.50 per game this season compared to 16.56 through week one last year. We’ll see what happens once the weather is better.
You can compare runs per week with previous seasons in this spreadsheet.
