CC Sabathia is on a roll, pitching eight shutout innings against the Red Sox Wednesday night, and posting the best game score of the day. He is now on a five-game hot streak, during which he allowed a 1.11 ERA, walked just six batters in 32 1/3 innings, and allowed three home runs. He threw 64 of his 95 pitches for strikes and did not walk a batter. The high percentage of strikes has been consistent throughout this streak. It would appear, given how deep he went in the game, that the Red Sox tried to attack his pitches early and failed.
At Brooks Baseball, you can see the PITCHf/x data for the game. Two things stand out to me. His release point was very tight for all his pitches. He also avoided a pattern, as he threw all four pitches early in the count and late in the count. Boston batters could not sit on a first-pitch fastball. It’s taken a while, but Sabathia appears to have adjusted to the reality of his age and injuries, and is using all his tools to get batters out.
The Yankees beat the Red Sox 8-0.
