Matt Carpenter hit his league leading 33rd home run Monday night part of a four-run eighth inning as the Cardinals come back to defeat the Nationals 7-6. That puts him back in first place in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. Mike Trout and J.D. Martinez had the night off and are second and third. Jose Ramirez went 3 for 5 with a home runs and a walk, the homer his 35th of the season. He moves back into the top five, ranking fourth, just ahead of the idle Mookie Betts.
It’s a really tough MVP race in the AL this year. These four hitters all deserve some share of the vote. I would be leaning toward Betts and Ramirez at this point due to Trout’s time on the disabled list, and that Martinez’s value is all in his hitting.
