The Opener

The Rays scheduled Ryne Stanek to make another start as an opener Saturday afternoon against the Blue Jays. Not having to pace himself, Stanek can pitch like a reliever in the first inning, and so far the opposition batting lines support that claim. As a reliever, the opposition hit .169/.260/.292 against him in 73 plate appearances (PA). As a starter, the opposition hit .165/.250/.320 against him in 108 PA. The higher power is not surprising as he is always facing what should be the best hitters on the opposing team. American League batters are averaging .249/.322/.423 in the first inning.
