Best Batter Today

There was a slight change in the order, but the top five players in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings remain the same. Alex Bregman took a rare collar, reducing his lead on Mike Trout. Trout went one for one with a walk and hit by pitch in a great duel, as both Rangers and Angels collected two hits per side. One of those hits was a home run by rookie first baseman Jose Fernandez, his first, and the Angels win 1-0. Justin Turner did not start, and is able to slip by Christian Yelich draws a walk in the Brewers 3-0 loss to the Cubs. Paul Goldschmidt remains fifth as he goes 1 for 3 with a walk and a double as the Diamondbacks beat the Rockies 6-3.

It’s a great rookie of the year race in the NL between Ronald Acuna of Atlanta and Juan Soto of Washington. It takes some time for rookies to make their way up the batter rankings, but Acuna now ranks ninth and Soto 22nd. Soto’s two home runs in the Tuesday night cap helped Washington sweep the Phillies. Acuna tripled in the Braves 4-1 win over the Giants. The Phillies are now in precarious position, 6 1/2 games out in the NL East. They will play the Braves seven times down the stretch, but at this point Philadelphia may need to win all seven of those games to have a shot at the division or a wild card.
