The Ghost of Billy Martin

The Athletics lost Sean Manaea for the rest of this season and all of 2019 due to shoulder surgery:

This is a huge blow for the A’s, who are a surprise playoff contender, due in no small part to Manaea. The lefty has had a breakout season for Oakland, posting a 3.59 ERA in 27 starts.

‘The A’s have been particularly stricken with pitching injuries this year. Stud pitching prospects A.J. Puk and Jharel Cotton had Tommy John surgery this spring, and Kendall Graveman and Daniel Gossett have had TJS during the year. Paul Blackburn and Andrew Triggs are also on the 60 day d.l., while Brett Anderson has also landed on the disabled list with an uncertain return date.

Billy Martin blew out the future of a very good 1980 Athletics rotation, and it took many years for Oakland to recover. This Oakland team protects their pitchers, but still wound up with the entire rotation on the DL. It is a testament to the depth of the team that they are still in the Wild Card race.
