Best Batter Today

Mike Trout stays atop the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings after drawing three walks Thursday night. It looks like teams have finally decided to pitch around Trout. He scored two runs as the Angels beat the Blue Jays 8-5. That’s the best way to counter the walk strategy, turn those walks into runs.

Jose Altuve, Jose Ramirez, Paul Goldschmidt, and Mookie Betts round out the top five. Betts had been falling in the rankings since his injury, but his 3 for 6 day with a home run boosted him back up.

Trout played his 1000th game Thursday night. His career WAR is now over 60 on both FanGraphs and Baseball Reference. Given his young start and superlative talent, he could reach 3000 games played, so we could be looking at 1/3 of his career. Most likely, by the time he finishes his prime, he will be an easy Hall of Fame pick. Without finishing the 2018 season, he’s ahead of Barry Bonds in terms of WAR at the same age.

I don’t know that he will set any big records, however. He’s a .300/.400/.500 player, but none of those are near records. He may hit 600 doubles and 600 home runs; he may hit 650 of each, but he would need a a very high number of triples to beat Hank Aaron‘s 1477 extra-base hit record. His record may wind up being most top five slots on career leader boards. Is it possible for the greatest player ever not to set a single career record?
