Hitting the Ball

Jeff Miller makes note of Andrelton Simmons and his low strikeout rate:

Simmons struck out Friday to end a streak of 90 plate appearances without doing so — the fourth longest in franchise history. Scioscia called the accomplishment “extraordinary.”

Simmons owns the fewest Ks this season among players with at least 200 PA, and it is not close. Simmons struck out 12 times, Michael Brantley is second at 24.

Simmons is hitting .306, with a BABIP of .307. In general, to hit your BABIP, one must hit a home run for every three strikeouts. Simmons has four home runs to go with his 12 K. Also note that the higher your BABIP, the more strikeouts one can afford to hit .300.
