Wade Miley pitched like Charlie Brown Friday night:
Then, on a 1-1 pitch to first baseman José Abreu, Miley took a liner off his left forearm. The ball left Abreu’s bat at 103.3 mph. Manager Buck Showalter, athletic trainer Brian Ebel and pitching coach Roger McDowell rushed to the mound. After a few warmup tosses and a long discussion near the mound, Miley stayed in the game.
But on a 1-0 pitch to the American League’s leading hitter, White Sox designated hitter Avasaíl García, Miley got smoked again. This one hit him in the left thigh area and knocked him to the ground at 102.1 mph off García’s bat. Both liners went for singles to put runners at first and second.
This time, Miley walked off into the Orioles dugout. He began the day with a record of 1-1 and his 2.32 ERA ranks 10th in the American League. But just 12 pitches into his night, he leaves this start in the opener of a three-game series.
In the Orioles previous game, Kevin Gausman was ejected after 20 pitches, so it has been a tough two days for Orioles starters. Despite the injury tonight, the Orioles lead the White Sox 2-0 in the sixth inning.
