Jason Vargas continued his dominance Thursday afternoon, pitching seven shutout innings to lower his ERA to 1.01. The obvious difference in Vargas this season is his switch in frequency between his four and two seam fastballs. That raised his ground ball rate, lowered his fly ball rate, and with a good defense behind him fieldable hits are down, and home runs are down as well. We’ll see if batters can adjust to his change in frequency of pitches as the season progresses, but right now, he’s doing everything right. The Royals beat the Rays 6-0.
