Jason Vargas leads the majors in ERA as he leads the Royals against Jake Odorizzi and the Rays. Vargas’s low ERA comes from his outstanding three-true outcomes. He allowed one home run and five walks in 37 2/3 innings while striking out 35 batters. Only four of the 30 hits he allowed went for extra bases. Odorizzi allowed five home runs in 25 innings so far this season, but those account for six of the nine runs he allowed. He is holding teams to a .213 OBP, so going deep is abut the only way to score against Odorizzi.
Dallas Keuchel brings his 5-0 record to New York as the Astros face Michael Pineda and the Yankees. It’s a contest between the top two winning teams in the American League. Keuchel is a bit of a combination of Vargas and Odorizzi. He owns the good K and BB numbers of Vargas, but like Odorizzi, he gives up home runs, and they account for most of his runs allowed. All six he allowed were solo shots. Pineda walked even fewer batters, than Keuchel, and allowed seven solo home runs, but in about 15 fewer innings. Don’t be surprised if there are a number of solo home runs in this game.
Finally, Gerrit Cole takes on Zack Greinke as the Pirates battle the Diamondbacks. Cole pitched well in his last four starts, allowing no more than two runs in each start. The Pirates, however, scored a total of six runs in those starts. Greinke lowered his ERA compared to 2016, with better walk and strike out numbers. He still allows home runs at a high rate, but that may just be the ball park.
Enjoy!
