The Astros and Yankees continue their series with Lance McCullers taking on Jordan Montgomery. Both pitchers collect a high number of strikeouts. McCullers shows more control, while Montgomery does a better job of keeping the ball in the park. Both pitchers like to throw the curve ball, Montgomery throwing the classic bender, McCullers using a bit of a knuckle ball.
Oakland at Texas features two pitchers doing well but losing, as Jesse Hahn faces Andrew Cashner. Hahn comes into the game with a 3.03 ERA, having allowed just one home run in 35 2/3 innings. Cashner has yet to record a win despite a 2.63 ERA. He walked 19 and struck out 15 in 27 1/3 innings, which I see as a sign of Cashner being very lucky. He only allowed 20 hits, and opponents are just 1 for 24 with runners in scoring position. Again, that’s a rate unlikely to hold up over a full season.
They go to the Matts in Milwaukee as Matt Harvey faces Matt Garza. This is not a great pitching match-up, but Harvey returns from his drunken, break-up suspension to try to improve his 5.14 ERA. Garza pitched well since returning from his injury, posting a 2.55 ERA.
The Dodgers and Rockies played a Coors Field slugfest Thursday night, won by the Rockies 10-7. On Friday, Clayton Kershaw takes on Tyler Chatwood. Even Kershaw gets hurt in Colorado, owning a 4.71 ERA career at the ballpark. That’s good enough for an 8-4 record, however. Chatwood allowed nine home runs this season in 43 2/3 innings. It’s not really his home park, however, as he allowed five at home and four on the road.
Enjoy!
