Games of the Day

The Rays and the Red Sox try to get a game in around the raindrops as Blake Snell faces Chris Sale. Snell owns a very unusual career so far. In 125 1/3 innings that composed his 26 starts, his ERA stands at 3.66. It’s not great, but it’s not bad. A pitcher can have a long career at that level. He walks a ton of batters, however, 73 in total. The 2017 showed no improvement, he consistently walks over five batters per nine innings. He does strike out a batter per inning, but even with that his batting average allowed is not that low, .266. His low ERA comes from limiting power, and from giving up tons of unearned runs. Nearly a quarter of his runs allowed were considered the fault of his fielders. Mistakes behind him are extra costly. Sale is on a six-game streak with at least ten Ks in a start. That’s 66 K in 44 2/3 innings, with just 10 walks and two home runs allowed.

The Fox Sports 1 game pits the Cubs and Jon Lester against the first place Cardinals and Carlos Martinez. Lester pitched poorly on the road so far this season, with a 6.06 ERA in three starts. He allowed 26 hits in 16 1/3 innings despite 16 strikeouts. The Cardinals won six of their last seven games to take the lead in the NL Central. Martinez is blowing away batters this season with 50 strikeouts in 42 innings. He owns a 2.81 ERA at home.

Enjoy!
