The Nationals and Orioles are off to good starts as they meet in their yearly interleague series. Gio Gonzalez takes on Kevin Gausman. Batters hit Gonzalez poorly this season, posting a .222 BA with a .316 OBP. They are drawing walks, but not much else. It gets worse with runners in scoring position, where batters are just 2 for 29 against him. Gausman has about the same gap between his BA and OBP, but his BA allowed stands at .321. He is not only being hit for average, but he also allowed 14 extra base hits. His opposition batting line might win a hitter an MVP award.
The World Champion Cubs travel to Colorado to face the first place Rockies. Jake Arrieta takes on rookie sensation Antonio Senzatela. Arrieta’s ERA is up this season. Part of that stems from his higher home run rate, but part of it comes from bad luck with runners in scoring position. In his previous three outstanding seasons, he held batters to a .210 RISP BA, not much higher than his overall mark of .193. This season, he allowed a .265 BA overall, but .400 with runners in scoring position. Senzatela showed great control so far, allowing just eight walks in 38 innings. He also is pitching well at Coors, with a 3.15 ERA in three starts.
Enjoy!
