Deserving To Win

The Yankees beat the Cubs 3-2 on an unlikely hit, a three-run homer by Brett Gardner in the top of the ninth inning.

Down to his team’s final strike, Gardner drove a full-count, two-out slider from Hector Rondon through the wind and over the wall down the right-field line for a three-run, ninth inning homer as the Yankees stunned the Cubs 3-2.

As Gardner crossed home plate, he leapt and exchanged a midair hug with Jacoby Ellsbury, who had walked with two outs after Chase Headley singled. The Yankees then turned to Aroldis Chapman — who before the game received his World Series ring from the Cubs — to close the game out.

The Yankees threatened constantly through the game, collecting 11 hits, three walks, and a hit by pitch compared to a total of six times on for the Cubs. Two of those were solo home runs by Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber, however. Three Cubs double plays, including one of two men thrown out at the plate kept the Yankees off the board until Gardner unloaded.

Gardner certainly came out of his slump with a bang. He hit .188/.316/.234 through his first 18 games, drawing walks but not much else. In his last six games, he hit five home runs and a double with 10 hits.
