The Diamondbacks travel to Washington as two of the best teams in the National League face off. Taijuan Walker takes on Tanner Roark. Walker’s stats look better than his ERA, especially since he struck out 33 batters in 29 2/3 innings. His FIP of 3.02 is much lower than his actual 3.94 ERA. Roark uses Nationals Park effectively, limiting all kinds of extra-base hits there to lower his slugging percentage allowed 36 points compared to road games.
Alec Asher makes his second start of the season as the Orioles face Boston and Chris Sale. Asher allowed eight home runs and 10 walks in his 29 innings during his first season of 2015. In 2016 and 2017 combines, he allowed one home run and seven walks in 36 innings, with an ERA over seven runs lower. Sale comes off his Baseball Musings Pitcher of the Month award hoping to start May strong. Sale walked six and struck out 52 so far in 37 2/3 innings. That’s a wow.
Finally, Sonny Gray makes his 2017 debut for Oakland as he battles the Twins and Erivn Santana. After two fine season in 2014 and 2015, injuries led to Gray seeing his walk and home run rates increase in 2016, and his ERA balloon to 5.69. He dominated in his two minor league starts, allowing three hits, no walks, and no runs in 11 innings, striking out 13. Santana leads the majors in ERA with a 0.77 mark. He defines unhittable right now with a .116/.189/.188 opponent slash line.
Enjoy!
