Sayonara, Ichiro

Ichrio Suzuki moved off the field and into the front office:

Ichiro Suzuki, who began his iconic Major League career 18 seasons ago with the Mariners, will now move into the next chapter of his life as a special assistant advisor with Seattle, the club announced on Thursday.

The 44-year-old Ichiro will not play again this season, but he will travel with the team.

While Suzuki didn’t officially retire, I suspect his career is over. He finishes with a .311/.355/.402 slash line and 3089 hits. He holds he record for hits in a season, 262 in 2004. It was an amazing career, and had he started in the US instead of Japan, he might very well have broke Pete Rose‘s hit record.

Many years ago I saw a heat map of where Ichiro hit for the highest average. It was down and away, off the plate, almost on the ground. He could top that pitch so it bounced high, and by the time it came down in a glove, he would be safe on first base. No one would teach a child to swing at that pitch, but for Suzuki, it was gold. Here’s wishing him a great post-baseball career!
