Jake Arrieta faces off against Max Scherzer as the Phillies and Nationals play the rubber game of their series. Arrieta is doing a great job of keeping the ball in the park. Eighteen of his 28 1/3 innings have come in Philadelphia, and that’s where he allowed his only dinger. Scherzer leads the NL in Tom Tango Cy Young points. He’s going deep in games with few runs allowed, striking out a ton of batters, and collecting wins.
Chris Sale takes on Doug Fister as the Red Sox and Rangers meet in Texas. Sale is Mr. No-Decision this season as he stands 2-1 in seven starts despite a 2.14 ERA. The lefty is holding right-handed batters to a .180/.241/.336 slash line. Doug Fister’s ERA is very low this season, 2.88. It might be an illusion, however, as opponents are reaching base at a .354 clip. They are hitting just .129 with runners in scoring position, however.
Finally, Justin Verlander battles Matt Koch as the Astros and Diamondbacks play the rubber game of their series. Verlander is tied with his teammate Gerrit Cole for the AL lead in Tom Tango Cy Young points (see link above). A good game will push him into the top slot. Koch is holding opponents to a .182 BA this season, although six of the 12 hits against him have gone for extra bases.
Enjoy!
