The Twins battle the Tigers with Jose Berrios facing Matthew Boyd. Berrios’s low walk rate is very much in the tradition of Twins pitchers, but his high strikeout rate, 9.04 sets him apart from most of his predecessors who allowed the ball to be put in play. Boyd allows a low batting average despite a low walk rate. Batters recorded an extremely low .232 BABIP against Boyd this season. It’s some combination of good luck and great defense.
Trevor Bauer and Dylan Covey both bring ERAs below three into the Indians game at the White Sox. Bauer achieves his 2.62 ERA by striking out three times more batter than he walks and keeping the ball in the park. Covey’s 2.22 mark comes from not allowing a home run in 28 1/3 innings. That’s the fourth most IP this season without allowing a home run, and the most by a starter.
Finally, Gerrit Cole and Paul Blackburn battle as the Astros continue their series with Oakland. Cole is 5-0 on the road with a 1.72 ERA. Blackburn makes his second start of the season. He is a control artist who walked just 16 men in his first 64 2/3 MLB innings.
